Collages : Isaiah Lopaz
An Archive in Action
Black Visual Grammar works through editions that consist of collage-making workshops and exhibition programs. Each edition begins with a thematic query- a call to develop relationships with specific subjects and ideas through image-making. In workshops, contributors are invited to respond to this call using materials provided by the archive, which include a library of images, scissors, tape, glue, board, and more. While prior experience with collage-making is not required, guidance is available for those seeking to discover visual languages that resonate with their instincts and imaginations.
Workshops typically run across two day sessions from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with catered lunch, snacks, and childcare to ensure a welcoming, supportive atmosphere for contributors. Collages created during these sessions are photographed and exhibited before being returned to contributors, who retain full ownership of their work. These workshops are dedicated spaces for documenting the knowledge, experiences, and imaginings of people who identify as Black.
The resulting collages and documentations are presented publicly in exhibitions. Exhibition formats vary and may include installations, performances, moving images, site-specific works, digital media, and printed matter. These events range from short-term engagements to long term installations. For more information please contact Isaiah Lopaz.
